Amateurs Rip It Up at SCMX RDs 6 & 7

July 11 & 13

By Rolfe Otterness

Brandon Haas and Tanner Schlegel showed up ready to rumble as they dominated all three of their classes at round 6 of the Spring Creek Super Series on the Friday before the national pro race.  Haas, showed that he still can rip as he snapped up overalls in the 25+, 30+ and Open A classes, despite strong competition from riders like Jake Loberg and Bryce Backaus.  Schlegel poured out his effort in the 16-24B, 250B and Open B classes to show his rear fender to competitors like Vincent Harens and Carson Wittman.   These two accounted for 6 of the total of 745 entries for Friday’s event.   Sunday featured a slightly lesser number of entries but still good competition as the Spring Creek track was in prime condition for another day of action.  Some of the track features were spiced up of changed for the weekend with the biggest change being the merging of (formerly) jumps 3 and 4 into one larger jump leading into the sand wash.

From Sunday’s action:

Gavin Pettit roosted down the long start straight to lead the 250 B class into motion.  Schlegel and Carson Wittman soon slotted into the second and third positions as they navigated the obstacles on lap one.   Pettit rode well to maintain his time out front into lap two but then Schlegel took over the prime spot, leaving Pettit to contend for second with Carson Wittman.   A battle ensued for the remainder of the moto but Wittman eventually prevailed to take over second on the last lap.   Kyler Hagedorn had a similar battle going with Logan Bennett for much of the race but he took fourth nearing the checkered flag.

Boston Horn, riding out of Kansas, jumped from the gate to lead moto two as he rounded turn one.  He held onto the lead for the first lap but Schlegel made a move coming down the hill about three quarters of the way through lap two and secured the lead.  Next domino to fall was Louie Etzel who was holding onto third early but Wittman zapped him on the last lap and also Bennett so he ended up rounding off the top five.

Jase Sonnenberg flew down the start to lead the 85 Mini 9-11 pack as moto 1 was fired off.   Sonnenberg had the track dialed in and began to build a lead immediately while Leighton Oswald latched onto second ahead of Braxton Gauthier and Tucker Pavlovich.   Oswald looked like he had second well in hand as they circulated but bobbled late in the moto, letting Gauthier take over second,  but held off Pavlovich for third.   Eli Bumgardner crossed the finish line for fifth just a bit  behind them.

Sonnenberg grabbed the holeshot yet again in moto two and took off  from pursuit.  Oswald and Gauthier dropped into the 2-3 positions  to battle for runner-up while Beau Engel and Pavlovich duked it out for fourth.   The last lap would see Sonnenberg cruise in with a big lead and Oswald hold on for second despite a surge by Gauthier which brought him in just a bike length or two short of second.   Engel took fourth over Pavlovich by a fraction of a second too, which greatly improved on his first moto tenth place finish.
