Labor Day weekend Race Report - SS RD 9 & 10

August 31 – Sept 1

By Rolfe Otterness

Rounds 9 and 10 of the Super took place on a beautiful Labor Day Weekend.    Sunny skies and and a nicely prepped track were just the ticket for a great event.   There were over 600 entries for Sunday’s race and about 490 on Monday, but the big winners of the weekend were Addison Boie winning Girls Jr. 9-12, Girls Sr. 12-16 and the Women’s class; and Tanner Schlegel who topped the 16-24B, 250B and Open B classes, both days for both riders. An outstanding performance. Checking out some other classes below:

Sunday

Ryder Halquist stormed off the gate to lead early in the first moto of the wild 85cc 12-15 class.   He was looking good out front as he completed lap one with Carl Oakes and Jaxon Arends trailing in his wake.  But Arends dispatched with Oakes on the next lap, leaving him to deal with pressure from Brayton Wills.   Arends closed in on Halquist and was pressuring him by the end of the next lap and continued until finally making his move on the last lap to take over out front.   Arends won with a bit of a margin over Halquist while Wills ended up in third over Oakes.  Kameron Hagedorn rounded out the top five after coming through the pack.

Arends nabbed the best start in moto two and set course for the checkered. Wills latched onto second with pursuit provided by Halquist and Oakes.   That set the order for the rest of the race as they circulated in a close configuration to the flag, where Arends took the win after extending his lead a bit on the last lap but they were all riding well.   Hagedorn once again rounded out the top five just a few seconds adrift.

Kohl Vickerman burst into the lead of the first moto in the 25+C  class and he led for the first lap with Alec Muller and Robbie Sandback close as they ripped into lap two.   Shortly after that Vickerman ran into some issues and dropped back while Sandbeck was applying pressure to Muller and slipped by for the lead around the outside of the turn at the announcing tower as they started the third lap.   Sandback had good pace and pulled a few seconds after that to secure the win over Muller.  Garrett Gilster took third over Grant Haviland with Matthew Appel in fifth.

Sandback launched well in moto two and started to build a lead quickly.   Gilster held second for a while but succumbed to the duo of Muller and Haviland as they battled, dropping back on the next lap.   Sandback built about a 12 second lead to secure the moto win and overall while the Muller/Haviland struggle continued to the finish with no change in order.  Gilster took fourth despite the best efforts of Mikal Guberud who grabbed fifth.

Monday

Sophia Johnson ripped up the start straight to lead the Women’s class as they hit the track for moto one.  Addison Boie and Lizzabeth Turney tore by and into the one/two positions in short order as they battled in the early part of the moto.  Boie broke free of this tussle and started to build a lead as the moto continued and hit the finish line jump with a nice lead.  Turney had a solid second place over Johnson while Emma Gerber recovered from a brief fall on lap one to secure fourth over Jeff Wolf.

Boie pulled the pack to lead going into moto two but Turney took over to lead the first two laps.   Boie was pressuring though and took over shortly after mid-moto.  Turney just couldn’t match her pace and at moto end it was Boie taking the win with a good margin.   Turney retained second with a safe lead over Johnson.   Wolf and Gerber rounded out the top five.

Louie Etzel led the Schoolboy 2 class through turn one as they were loosed upon the track by Mr. Tom Kidd.  Carson Wittman was soon by and leading with Etzel and Tyler Maas in close pursuit.   The top three stayed pretty close for the duration but Wittman maintained his lead throughout, taking the win over Etzel.   Maas closed in on Etzel on the last lap but couldn’t close the deal.  Jeff Lewison ended up in fourth over Luke Carlson.

Wittman shot out front to lead the next moto with Etzel and Maas looking for a battle as they circulated just behind him.  On lap three, though, there was a crash involving multiple lead riders as they came down the hill.   Wittman came out the worst of the bunch and he ended up with a DNF.  Maas recovered quickly to take over the lead with Carlson and Lewison also gaining positions.   Maas took off for the win with Carlson and Lewison going 2-3 and James Schaffer improving from his first moto seventh place finish as he rounded out the top five.
