Super Series RD 2 – Riehm Racks Up Wins

May 3

By Rolfe Otterness

Brandon Riehm rolled into Spring Creek Park fired up for some motocross mastery as the Super Series resumed after the long winter break.  Riehm showed the gang the fast way around the track as he dominated all six motos in 25+ A, 30+ A and Open A and was the only rider for the day to grab the overall in three classes.   There were some strong competitors in those classes as Mitchell Prescott, Jake Loberg and Wyatt McGrath each grabbed a second place in the three classes respectively but Riehm’s strong starts and smooth style won out.

The day dawned bright and just a bit cool but warmed nicely for a change from the cool spring temps the previous week.   The racers seemed to be enthusiastic with 652 entries checking in for the day.   The track was in pretty good springtime shape without as many ruts as normal for the first race of the season.

Jada Murphy launched into a strong start in moto one of the the Women’s class and soon secured a bit of a lead with Lexi Gower latching onto second place.   Those two had an edge in speed and pulled ahead of the field but Murphy was edging away from Gower and took the win with about 6 seconds as the flag flew to end the moto.  Jasmin Jonas was next across the line with Emma Gerber and Katelyn McKenna rounding out the top five.

Jonas ripped up the start straight to lead early in the next moto but Murphy was soon by to lead early on lap one.   Murphy built her lead while Jonas held onto second for most of the moto over Gower but the last lap is the one that counts and Gower surged to take second behing Murphy.   Jada Jonas took fourth while McKenna once again grabbed fifth.

Chase Kinney blasted to the head of the pack and led them through turn one as the 16-24 C class hit the track.   Austin Moeller quickly established a challenge as he grabbed second and began to pressure Kinney while Joshua Lynch settled into third.  Lap three featured a nicely executed pass by Moeller on Kinney as the ran along the bottom of Mt. Martin.   Moeller stretched out the throttle cable on the last lap as he pulled out a couple seconds of additional lead over Kinney to take the win.  Lynch ran in for a respectable third place over Jacob Baxter, who had displaced Chase Swinney in fourth about mid-moto.     Moto 2 featured another nice holeshot by Kinney but once again Moeller had the edge take the win.

Levi Geis made a charge to turn one as the 85 9-12 moto was released from the starting line.   Unfortunately he washed the front wheel as he dived into the turn at the head of the pack and was left picking up his bike after they got by without nailing him or his bike.  Parker Labeau took the opportunity to fly around in the lead while Geis quickly remounted and took off dead last.   Geis and his bike were both undamaged and he absolutely was flying as he caught the rest of the riders and blitzed by a bunch of them to get all the way to third behind Landon Gottas by the end of the first lap.  Labeau was running well out front with Geis soon hounding Gottas and making the pass for second as they came down the hill towards the base of Mt. Martin on lap two.   Lebeau had a fairly nice lead at this point but Geis was charging and was eating away at the gap.   Geis finally was ready to pounce as the two riders hit turn one to start the last lap and he pushed on to take over control of the moto.   He went on for the win with Labeau and Gottas taking the 2-3 spots.   Eli Bumgardner and Liam Kruger motored across for fourth and fifth.

The second moto was a bit anticlimactic as Geis grabbed the holeshot and did not crash in turn one, motoring off to a big, big lead for the win while Labeau had some problems and DNFed.   Gottas took second for the moto and second overall then while Bumgardner and Kruger went 3-4  and Braxton Johnson rounded out the top five.
